Security Patches for Internet Servers
Hackers and
malcontents who want to destroy the
Internet, and your business don’t
sleep. The computer systems they employ
don’t sleep; they are automatons.
Saturday,
January 25, 2003 at 12:30 AM in the
morning a worm was released on the
Internet that shut down 13,000 Bank of
America ATM machines and impacted over
247,000 systems world wide.
Five of the
thirteen root servers that are the very
foundation of the domain name service
system were completely disabled.
Hundreds of
thousands of Internet sites and services
where down or otherwise slowed to a
crawl’s pace.
What
happened? How could this nightmare have
been prevented?
While the
FBI is still tracking down the persons
involved in setting off the worm, it all
boils down to one patch that was not
applied when Microsoft released it to
the public on July 25, 2002.
That’s
right, six months after the patch was
publicly available, and the majority of
organizations across the world did not
apply this patch.
Bloomberg
Financial News, technical department,
asked why on Monday, January 27, 2003.
The answer
was astonishing…
``Chief
information officers are faced with a
deluge of patches, and it becomes an
issue of prioritization, and it's very
expensive,'' Rouland said. A consultant
charges about $100 an hour and takes
about two hours to fix each server, he
said.
That’s $200
per patch!
Think about
the following facts for a moment:
-
In 2002, Microsoft Corporation came
out with 72 security patches. A
consultant charging $100 per hour, and
taking two hours per server would
charge $14,400 per server per year to
apply 72 patches.
-
In 2002, RedHat came out with 38
security patches for RedHat Linux. A
consultant charging $100 per hour, and
taking two hours per server would
charge $7,600 per server pear year to
apply 38 patches.
We Manage
Servers charges $75 per server per month.

limit as to how many patches, and we

Security patches is the application
(installation) of updates for
applications and operating systems.
Security patches is not the same as

only one aspect (layer) of server
