By clambering up the value ladder, hosts also gain an edge with customers who themselves are moving up in geographic reach, size, and complexity.  We Manage Servers, for instance, targets hosts with shared-server customers likely to move up to dedicated one day. Yeah, these hosts can already offer dedicated servers, but their upwardly mobile customers don’t have a clue what’s involved in managing them.

“We’re finding out in the small to medium-size business market that they expect dedicated to be much like shared,” says Peter Abraham, We Manage Servers’ president and CEO. Hosts that want to keep those customers from moving elsewhere can do so by helping them hug their servers MSP-style, he adds.  Managed services also provide an edge in marketing to new customers.

“We can help them sell faster,” Perchansky says. That’s especially true for hosts targeting mid-market customers -- the ones who need server management but don’t have pockets deep enough for a full blast MSP.  For example, while UUNet and Qwest’s managed services run $10,000 a month and up, We Manage Servers’ start at $150.
